Forklift Truck Accidents
All employers have a duty to take reasonable care for the safety of their staff. Employers must, by law, provide a safe working environment for their employees.
There are various types of forklift truck accidents and such accidents are often very serious. These accidents include loads being dropped or pushed onto another employee, drivers trapping limbs, driving off a loading bay and pedestrians being struck by forklift vehicles.
Most accidents caused by forklift drivers are due to insufficient training. Employers are under a duty to identify any hazards or risks of injury and implement procedures to reduce such risks and also to provide adequate safety training.
Forklift drivers have to attend safety training courses at least once every 3 years and must report any problems with their forklift vehicle to their supervisors or managers.
The Health and Safety Executive have published guidance to help prevent injuries and deaths and have set out various measures to be followed in order to help prevent accidents involving forklift trucks, including:
- Provision of adequate training for forklift truck drivers, supervisors and managers
- Using suitable equipment for the job to be carried out
- Laying out premises in such a way to ensure that forklift trucks can move safely
- Ensuring that forklift trucks and premises are maintained properly
