RAAW holds first Asbestos Awareness Day
13 November 2008
RAAW staged its first asbestos awareness day and was deemed a success as dozens of residents attended throughout the day
Ashton Morton Slack's asbestos specialist Isobel Lovett provided her expertise and support at the event. The event took place at Mary Swanwick Memorial Hall, Old Whittington. During the day talks were given by local councillors, health professionals, RAAW, Isobel Lovett of Ashton Morton Slack and a local cancer sufferer.
RAAW organised the event to make the public aware about the dangers of becoming exposed to asbestos and to get members of the public to sign letters of objection against the planning application to operate a waste transfer station in Old Whittington. This transfer station would contain a very high percentage of asbestos waste.
Campaigners attending the day were delighted by the number of people who attended and signed the letters of objection. With many expert speakers attending, which included a local cancer suffer, a RAAW spokeswoman said "The day was very informative and at times very moving, we hope to take a lot of what we learnt to help build a strong case against the waste transfer plans"
Isobel Lovett of Ashton Morton Slack added "We were very pleased with how the day went. It is important that the public are fully aware of the risks in being exposed to asbestos and the devastating effects it can have on peoples' lives".
