New Pleural Plaques proposal announced

21 July 2008

A “no fault scheme” has been proposed to compensate pleural plaques victims with payments up to £5,000.

The Government consultation papers is currently being scrutinised by Bradford North MP Terry Rooney who commented "on the face of it, this shows the Government is taking this seriously. However, I want to study the document very closely."

Sadly it does appear that the proposals are for the taxpayer to foot the bill for this compensation, effectively providing a let off for the insurance industry that previously faced a £1bn payout over pleural plaques before the House of Lords ruling last October.

The previous plans for the insurance industry to part fund a register of pleural plaques sufferers have been abandoned as "disproportionate".

Ashton Morton Slack who have acted for many victims of pleural plaques and other asbestos related conditions will be keeping a close eye on the developing situation.
