£8 million payout for disabled child
Nine-year-old Owen Johnson has been awarded £8 million after it was found that he was deprived of oxygen at birth.
Owen sustained brain damage during his birth at Dudley's Wordsley Hospital and has choreoathetoid cerebral palsy. The NHS Trust accepted the failures it had made during Owen's delivery in April 1999. Owen underwent a period of near total asphyxiation as an obstetrician was not called to examine an abnormal indication of fetal distress.
Owen and his family have received a £2 million lump sum payment to be followed by annual payments; these will provide care for Owen for the rest of his life.
Sally Johnson, Owen's mother has said that her son loves visiting museums and going to the park. She has said that Owen is "a really determined little boy and is never satisfied just sitting around".
