Charity Work - Commitment to our community

At Ashton Morton Slack community work is an important facet of the firm’s strategy. Through the implementation of a payroll-giving scheme the firm have encouraged solicitors and staff to nominate a charity to give a donation to each time they get paid, and because it comes out of their gross salary the charity gets an immediate tax relief of up to 40% of each donation.

Ashton Morton Slack are members of Business in the Community (BITC). Through this Government initiative, solicitors and staff have been able to get volunteers visiting Sheffield schools for an hour a week to encourage children to read and also to ensure that they have contact with the working world so they are inspired to consider all their options as they grow up. Solicitors and staff are also able to take part in a number of community challenges such as taking part in ITV’s the big clean up through a BITC Cares challenge at Bankwood School in the Gleadless area of Sheffield.

Ashton Morton Slack area also closely involved with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, though the support of a dedicated fund which gives financial help to a wide range of Sheffield based groups. National groups are also supported; where they are involved in activity close to the firm’s own work and interests. A good example of this is the national road safety charity, Brake.

It is the belief of everyone at Ashton Morton Slack that getting involved in community and charitable work just makes good business sense. The formal charity work carried out by the firm and its solicitors are also complemented by the way in which many staff members get involved in local groups and charities in their own time.

Here are some of the projects that Ashton Morton Slack has been involved with in the Sheffield community:

  1. Ongoing Pro bono help by solicitors at the Stocksbridge Law clinic
  2. Membership of Business in the Community and South Yorkshire CARES (the latter getting us involved in the Bankwood Primary School and Right to Read Projects)
  3. Sponsorship of Sheffield F.C. and The Ultimate Sheffield Golf Open
  4. Our fund with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation
  5. The manning of one of the water stations for the Sheffield marathon
